I drive through this intersection a few times a day and have been attempting to figure out the City of Vancouver’s vision. The intersection at Burrard and Cornwall (Burrard Bridge) is a total mess right now. The North side of Cornwall has been removed, forcing cars heading West on Cornwall into one lane when approaching from Burrard either North of South. The Seaforth is being renovated at the same time, which is probably causing traffic to be worse than it needs to be.

Burrard Street Bridge south end improvements
Construction is scheduled for the intersection at Burrard Street and Cornwall Avenue, to simplify the intersection and improve safety for all road users.

Location
The majority of construction from August 26 to the end of 2013 will be concentrated on these streets:
- East side of Burrard Street from the bridge to 1st Avenue
- North side of Cornwall Avenue between the bridge and Cypress
- 1400 Block of Chestnut Street

End: Summer 2014 (completion date subject to change)

Monday to Friday, 7:00am to 5:00pm (may include weekend work)
Impacts to traffic, parking, businesses and grounds
Construction work will take place in phases over the next several months through next spring.
Twelve trees were removed along Burrard Street and Cornwall Avenue. These trees conflict with the construction of the new intersection. While we need to remove these trees, the City has worked hard to preserve all other existing trees within the project site. It is expected that over 80 new trees will be planted in their place when construction is complete.
The Burrard and Cornwall intersection will remain open and be accessible to motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians with some minor short term exceptions. There will be full access to businesses along Cornwall Avenue and in Vanier Park.
Local traffic control plan
City staff have planned traffic control measures to manage the flow of traffic in the area, especially during rush hour periods.
During the first phase, there will be two lanes on Burrard Street in each direction during rush hour and two eastbound lanes and one westbound lane open on Cornwall Avenue. During other times of the day, intermittent closures down to one lane each way may be necessary.
Chestnut Street is closed to traffic (from the lane south of Greer Avenue to Cornwall Avenue) until November 30. Starting September 23, only one lane will be available to turn right from Burrard Street onto Cornwall Avenue. Plan for delays or use alternative routes.
Other temporary, short-term traffic changes may occur through the duration of the project. Please plan for some delays in this area and travel carefully through the work zone.
How this project will improve the city
Improvements will:
- Make the intersection easier to navigate and safer for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians
- Improve safety by reducing the maximum number of pedestrian crossings across Burrard from five to two
- Reduce the speed and volume of vehicles coming off the bridge and entering Cornwall Avenue
